The purpose of green t-shirt manufacturing is to be environmentally friendly and socially responsible. From a technical perspective, a green t-shirt is one that’s eco-friendly because it contains materials that were manufactured, processed and then transported in a way that aligns with principles associated with social responsibility. There are many different facets of green manufacturing and various ways that companies can contribute to the cause.
About Organic Cotton
One way that a t-shirt can be made environmentally friendly is by using organic cotton. The reason why this matters is because non-organic cotton is produced in a way that’s damaging to the environment. There are chemical substances used for the crop that end up negatively affecting the cotton. This includes pesticides and chemical fertilizers, among other harsh substances that are not environmentally friendly. These substances often leak into the water and the soil used while producing cotton.
Why Cotton Green T-Shirts Feel Better
The reason why so many chemicals are used is because cotton is dirty when it’s being grown. When cotton isn’t organic, chlorine bleach and other harsh whiteners are used during the production process to brightening the color. On the other hand, organic cotton uses what’s called oxygen bleach because it doesn’t contain harsh chemicals that are harmful to the soil and the environment. Another benefit of not using harsh chemicals during the production of cotton is it’s softer. In other words, wearing a t-shirt made from organic cotton just feels better.
Other Green T-Shirt Materials
When green t-shirts are produced from polyester, they are often made of plastic from landfills that are then recycled into yarn. This is exceptionally beneficial given the astronomical problem with the overflow of plastic in landfills. Another material that’s being used more often to support green initiatives is modal. This material is used in place of rayon because it’s made from beech trees. This is a better option because of the way in which rayon is produced. It often involves the use of harsh chemicals that damage the environment.
Transporting Green T-Shirts
How materials are transported play a role in the process of creating a green t-shirt. Generally, making a garment requires transporting materials more than 15,000 miles from where it was produced to where it will be sold. This ends up having a negative effect on the environment. In order to limit the amount of fuel that’s necessary when transporting materials, the transportation loop is shortened by ensuring materials are only sourced locally.
There are many reasons to choose an eco-friendly t-shirt. In addition to being socially responsible, they also feel better. Employing eco-friendly processes when making t-shirts makes business sense.
